Stroke

Stroke is the 3rd leading cause of death and disability in adults in the world. It is projected that in 2030, stroke incidence will increase in large proportions (from 16 million in 2005 to 23 million in 2030).This is predicted to affect especially developing countries like Malaysia due to its rapid epidemiological transition. The burden of stroke from mortality, disability and complications is therefore alarming. The cost of treating stroke in the US is huge (USD43 billion/year in 2009).

Use the FAST test to remember warning signs of stroke.

F = FACE Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?

A = ARMS Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?

S = SPEECH Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence. Does the speech sound slurred or strange?

T = TIME If you observe any of these signs (independently or together), call ambulance immediately.
